Whitney celebrates Detroit's birthday with 'classics menu' - The Detroit News
“Destination restaurant the Whitney will celebrate the city's 324th birthday this month with a special menu of Detroit Classics.
Highlighting some "greatest hits" dishes from Detroit restaurants of the 20th century, the two-course menu is served Monday through July 25. It starts with your choice of Golden Mushroom soup, the Whitney's take on chef Milos Cihelka's signature starter, or a classic Maurice salad made famous around these parts by Hudson's department store.”
The Detroit Classics menu has four entree courses, all accompanied by garlic cheese bread in the style that once was served at Fox & Hounds in Bloomfield Hills.
Choose from a chargrilled Delmonico steak inspired by Carl's Chophouse with onions, zip sauce, whipped potatoes and chef's seasonal vegetables, pan-fried chicken crusted with Better Made potatoes chips served with fries and Vlasic dill chips, Vernors-glazed salmon with wild rice and grilled asparagus or baked eggplant with scalloped onions, potatoes and a bechamel.
All dinners come with a slice of birthday cake for dessert.
“At 324 years old, the old Detroit is evolving into a bold, new Detroit,” says Whitney owner Bud Liebler in a media alert touting the limited-time menu. “We believe the city’s best days are still ahead — and that’s something worth celebrating. We’re proud to be part of it.”
On July 23 (the day before Detroit's official birthday on July 24), the Whitney will host a party for the city in its lush garden area with coney dogs, birthday cake and a live band performing Motown music. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and admission is $5.
The Whitney mansion and restaurant is at 4421 Woodward in Detroit. Call (313) 631-1569 or visit thewhitney.com for reservations.
